In one of my previous posts I wrote about reading your email. Lance Bledsoe wanted to know how it is done. Here are some of his questions:

Well I guess I can't say this is completely surprising, since I've always heard that this was going on, but it is kind of unsettling to read about.

I do have some questions about the technical details: If I send or receive an email message via my company's computer network, at what point exactly are the email messages visible to the Big Brother IT person? Do they reside on the company's outgoing mail server (e.g., smtp.bigcompany.com)? Are copies made and archived from there? And what about incoming messages? And what about messages that I send or receive from a personal email account? Can they be read as well? What if I access my personal email account via a webmail application?

Is encryption the only way to keep email correspondence private, or do you have a way around that as well?
